Healthcare cybersecurity faces novel threats from AI deployment itself. Large language models trained on patient data or integrated into clinical workflows become attractive targets for attackers. Model poisoning, where training data is subtly manipulated to cause systematic errors during deployment, could alter clinical decisions without leaving obvious signatures. Adversarial examples, inputs designed to fool AI systems, might cause models to misclassify conditions or recommend inappropriate treatments. Healthcare organizations must understand these threats before deploying models in clinical environments, which means security teams need expertise in AI-specific attack vectors, not just traditional cybersecurity.
Verification emerges as the real bottleneck in healthcare AI. Clinical deployment requires evidence that models perform as expected in diverse patient populations, that edge cases have been identified and handled, that failure modes have been characterized, and that drift over time can be detected and addressed. Verification is slower and more thorough than validation because healthcare tolerates no surprises. This reality means that healthcare AI development timelines must account for verification complexity, and attempts to skip verification steps to accelerate deployment create risks that no organization should accept.
